..So far, this 'cold frame' has worked out just as I'd hoped, despite some initial concerns; I was a bit disappointed as I began to remove the pieces from the box, as the materials seem a tad flimsy to me...However, I put it together quickly and quite easily, (requiring only a + screwdriver), and surprisingly, the plants survived single digit temps last night!!! (I purchased the cold frame with the hope and intention of 'over wintering' a few potted plants from my summer herb garden, after a bad wind storm recked the zipper on the little mini greenhouse I had recently purchased on Amazon.)
I set up the cold frame over an empty flower bed, against the south side of the house; and dug out about 3 inches of dirt on the inside of the frame, so that the bottom of the frame rests about 3 inches below the rest of the bed's surface, for some added stability, insulation and protection. After placing the plants inside, I took the extra soil and packed it around the base of the outside of the frame, and on the inside, around the base of the pots; I am hoping this will give it some additional protection from the elements and help to keep the roots warm, (I will probably add some mulch on the inside, around the pots, as well.) And there is enough room that I could put some heated water bottles inside, to help them through those extra cold nights.
But so far, it's not a bad little cold frame for the price...Pix to come!
