Straight Shaft String Trimmer Review
I've been a small engine tech (2 & 4 cycle) for over 30yrs, so let me tell you a few things I have done to make my Ryobi SS26 run great. First and foremost is the carb hi & lo screws MUST be readjusted to a slightly richer mixture. As it is delivered, the machine is way too lean on both lo and hi adjustments (just the way the EPA likes it..btw) and can not develop full power. If held at wide open throttle the engine will overheat. The adjustment is very slight but VERY necessary.....I used the special tool and turned mine out no more than 1/4 turn each and the engine went from hard starting and wouldn't accept any throttle to xlnt. Slotting the mixture screws so they can be turned using a regular screwdriver also works well. Cold starting goes like this....full choke/full throttle/pull starter 2-3 times until engine "pops" or burbles/dies. Turn choke lever to middle position/still holding full throttle and pull starter 2-3 times until engine starts......warm engine for a minute or so at middle choke then flip choke to run and go to work. This is all it should take AFTER readjusting your carb.Another glaring oversight I saw was that these little trimmers do not come equipped with any type of paper or foam air filter. They do have a mesh screen over the carburetor inlet but that's not enough, you need some type of media there to catch the fine debris that could/will get by the screen. The air filter lid does have a nice square opening inside that I was able to slip a small square of UNI foam air filter material into, now we have some filtering! This is an absolute must IMO.
Another thing I had read is that these can be hard starting right after shut down.....mine exhibits the same traits BUT I did find that if I grab the throttle trigger and pull it once before restarting the engine fires right up. Strange, yes......I will have to investigate later but for now just squeeze the trigger a time or two and you should be good to restart. I do KNOW it has nothing to do with flooding or repriming or anything else carburetor related....it maybe related to the engine stop button though...we'll see.
I am very happy with the power and cutting ability with the bump type line head.....it works perfectly. If you have any questions or have trouble with your Ryobi SS26 please don't hesitate to email at kelley 4 four at MSN dot COM.
