The above description is incorrect. The actual diameter is 16.8 inches.

It fits PERFECTLY inside the Weber Smokey Mountain 18.5 inch smoker aka WSM 18.5 ON THE TOP SHELF
It fits PERFECTLY inside the Weber Smokey Mountain 18.5 inch smoker aka WSM 18.5 ON THE 2ND SHELF

I tried to cancel this order when I read earlier the false description about the 17.5 inch statement.
If it were 17.5 inches, then it would not have worked out.

Customer Service was kind enough to say that if that were the case, then they would cover the return cost.

In the end all worked out okay.

Note that the only downside is that you have to bring these inside when not being used UNLESS you really have them greased up pretty good with Crisco Shortening.

I figure the cast iron will make the WSM even better in maintaining a steady/constant temperature
It would cost more, but you could place one of these CAST IRON grates on BOTH the top and 2nd shelves.

The second shelf would then have the water basin underneath it and the top cast iron grate on top it.
This should bring about pretty good heat stabilization on that second shelf.
