I passed on these as exterior step lights, in favor of the slightly pricier LED offering from WAC. But recently, I had the need to add a couple of exterior down lights to illuminate the face of our recessed garage door, i.e. something dramatic/contrasty in terms of highlighting, but not overly bright. I first tried the WAC units, but since their single LED fires down when oriented horizontally (as a step light ought to), it was shining light sideways when installed as a ceiling light.

So I turned to these American Lighting units, combined with their non-louvered Smooth Faceplate.

Unlike the single-LED WAC units, these have a 12-LED matrix behind the glass, leading me to make some assumptions of the quality of what's tucked inside (generally speaking, the more LEDs I see packed into a light source, the lower the quality of the product). BUT for now I'm not dwelling on that, because this unit puts out the type of light I'm looking for -- a broad swath of warm light that blends in with the nighttime aesthetic of the neighborhood.

I'll be keeping an eye on these through the winter months, and will report back any problems that pop up. Assuming they continue to work as advertised, I may end up choosing these over WAC for a series of interior stair lights I'll be installing soon. Despite my dislike of the mulit-LED array under the lens, the overall build quality seems to suggest these lights are worthy of more prominent placement.
