First off I really wanted to love this unit. Going green is big with me and an electric trimmer sounded like a great idea so I was excited about the purchase. I have been using it for several months now and over all it is not meeting my expectations. I have detailed below but because I have several serious issues with the trimmer I would not recommend it to a friend.Pros: Very powerful, will cut through anything from tall grass to full grown weeds that look like small shrubs. Balance is good. Has good features like the swiveling head for edging. Battery has good life. Long 4 yr warranty on the motor and components and 2 yrs on the battery. Phone support was very good. I have called 3 times and each time gotten someone quickly.
I probably live in a hard environment for this unit, Texas is hot, we have St Augustine grass which is tough to edge and we have big yard. So here goes - your results may vary.
Now the bad:
1. Line does not auto feed. Have to stop and pop the top off the spool and pull line out. The trimmer line seems to get welded together in spots on the spool. I have actually had to take out the spool and use a sharp knife and needle nose pliers to get the end unstuck from the spool and started again. This is the line that came with the trimmer. I have tried a heavier line and it gets stuck together less but the auto feed does not work consistently and in particular when edging.
2. Swiveling head does not lock in place. There is a large button that you press to swivel the head and it sticks in the depressed position and does not return to locked. This is compounded by the fact that it is smooth and rounded so there is no easy way to pull it back out wasting more time. I have a feeling some graphite powder would fix this and will be picking some up to try.
3. When the trimmer first arrived the head and handle were not tight and rocked on the shaft. The screws holding the motor and handle halves together were loose. 2 min with a torx head driver fixed the ones that were not recessed too far for my tool.
4. Things gets wrapped around the shaft. The trimmer is not powerful enough to leave things stuck there and overheats quickly so you have to get them out. If something like fishing line get caught around the shaft it can take a considerable amount of time to remove due to limited access to the shaft.
5. About a month after I bought it the motor started smoking and locked up. I called Greenworks and got someone right away. They gave me the name of a repair shop about 25 min away. I called the shop and due to a busy springtime they were behind and it was going to take about 3 weeks to repair the unit. I called Greenworks back and they agreed to send me lower shaft/motor assembly. They were currently out of stock so it took about two weeks for the replacement to get here. The new motor has been working fine but I noticed when a long strand of grass got wound around the spool and I stopped to remove it there was a slight burning smell. I take extra care now to stop as soon as anything gets caught on the spool and clear it.
Again I would have liked to tell you to run out and buy one. If it didn't have a 4 year warranty I would try and return it and get my $ back. If you live in a cooler climate and have a softer grass it may work better for you. However being that it was one of the most expensive electric trimmers out there and the problems I continue to have, I recommend you look for other alternatives.
Best of luck!
