Curt 51140 Triflex Brake Controller Review
When I bought a 19.5 foot travel trailer in May of this year, I went to my favorite mechanic and asked him to select and install an electronic brake controller in my Toyota Sequoia so I could tow the trailer. I knew nothing about electronic brake controllers at the time. I now know more than I ever wanted to know about them. I am an engineer and I should have known better than to trust a mechanic with such an important decision. During my first 800 mile trip with the trailer, I noticed that coming to a stop from any speed was an ordeal. The SUV/trailer would lurch to a stop. Sometimes the trailer tires would skid before I came to a stop. I also noticed that my trailer tire tread was wearing off pretty fast.I went back to my mechanic and he told me it was my brake pad adjustment that was causing the lurching and tire wear. He had one of his guys adjust the brake pads. At the end of my next 800 mile trek with the trailer, I noted that I had almost no tread left on two of my four tires. The tires were also smoking hot when I would come to a stop. I also noted that I was getting 7.9 MPG with my SUV while towing the trailer instead of the 16.5 MPG that I normally got on such a trek when not towing the trailer.
I was really alarmed with what I was seeing with my trailer tires so I started doing some Internet research. I found out that the Curt Venturer Brake Controller that the mechanic had installed was a timer type controller. It continues to increase brake power (output voltage) to the trailer brakes the longer you press your foot on the brakes regardless of the speed you are driving when you start braking. Based on that design, the trailer tires are going to skid almost every time you come to a stop. Heaven knows what would happen if you had to brake really hard from a high speed.
I went back to my mechanic and asked him to replace the Curt Venturer with a Curt Triflex Electric Brake Controller which is a proportional controller. He tried to convince me that it was the wheel alignment on my trailer that was causing the issues...not my brake controller. However, he did agree to change the controller.
Since the change, I get smooth stops with my trailer every time regardless of my speed when I start braking. I am getting normal tread wear on the trailer. I am also getting an average of 8.9 MPG instead of the 7.9 MPG I was getting with the Venturer controller - a 13% increase!
Get a proportional brake controller like this Curt Triflex Electric Brake Controller instead of a timer-type controller like the Curt Venturer and save yourself a lot of headaches and mechanic costs. Also get another mechanic if he insists on installing a timer controller instead of a proportional controller.
