Kohler GM62347 Maintenance Kit for 17/18/20 kW Residential Generators Review

My 1st year of owning a Kohler 20RESA 20kW residential generator flew by quickly and my generator has performed admirably for the few times it was needed.

Last week, onCue (Kohler's monitoring software) texted and emailed me with an Error 34. I went out and checked the generator to find that the error was the maintenance timer alerting me that it was time for annual maintenance. I'm a little irritated because I think that the onCue software should be smart enough to tell me it's the maintenance timer expiring, but in any case, I'm glad it wasn't anything other than that.

If you are like me and have changed the oil, oil filter, spark plugs, and air filter of your cars, motorcycles, atv, lawnmower, etc... Then you can definitely do the routine annual maintenance on your Kohler generator. In my area, Buckeye Power Systems is the Kohler service gorilla in town, supporting both residential and large commercial generator service. Their annual service and support contracts are very complete, with 2 visits a year and priority queue during issues - but their annual price reflects their top notch service and support. This professional service is almost 6x the price of this kit - to their defense, they do more than just change the consumables, but my unit is running well and I can't stomach the professional services cost.

Much like a car or a small motor, I ran the generator for 5 minutes to heat up the oil so that it flows easier... This was a mistake in hindsight. The damn unit exhaust pipes are blazing hot which making working around them hazardous to your skin until they cool down.

* Disconnect: I selected "STOP" at the generator. After it successfully entered stop mode, I turned off the breaker to the battery charger and carb heater inside the house. Returning to the generator, I shutoff the load breaker. I removed the two screws on the top of the unit near the controller that secure the side panel and removed it - this exposes the battery. I loosened the nut on the negative terminal and removed the connector, then as I am safety conscious, placed a strip of electrical tape over the terminal.

* Drain oil: Start the oil drain first and be prepared to wait a while for it to drain. Behind the battery is the oil drain tube. Pull it out over your collection basin and remove the plug. Remove the dipstick and oil fill cap on the engine. And this next step - DON'T BURN YOURSELF. There is a valve straight down from the fill cap at the bottom of the oil sump. It is a simple open close valve, use a pair of pliars to turn the valve from its perpendicular closed state to a parallel open state. While the oil is draining, go ahead and remove the oil filter (lefty loosey). It gives you something to do and it opens up the motor more to aid in drainage.

* Plugs: I worked on my plugs while the unit drained oil. There's one on the back side of the motor and one on the front under the oil fill cap. Pull off the plug boot, then use a 5/8" spark plug socket to remove the plugs (lefty loosey). There's not a huge amount of room to work with, but it's far from impossible. After examining the plugs, they were definitely fouled but possible to clean up if you wanted to. I installed my new plugs with a torque wrench and 5/8" socket at 20lbs. Then snapped the plug boots back on. I noticed that the oil was still draining.

* Air filter: My air filter was only slightly impacted by dirt and dust, but I replaced it anyway. I will be blowing the used one out to be reused next year. On this 20kW unit, you have two thumbscrews to remove the cover and the filter pops right off. I wiped off the top then placed the new air filter in place.

* Oil filter: After it stops draining (keep the tube as low as possible to encourage all of the oil to flow out), close the valve by turning it perpendicular to the flow, plug the drain. Hold the oil filter, open end up, and fill it with oil until it reaches the bottom of the threads. Lubricate the rubber seal with oil and then let it sit for a few minutes to soak into the membrane. Then flip it over and screw it into place - hand tighten , then another � rotation

* Fill `er up: Using a funnel to avoid spill, dump the remaining quart from the filter fill and a second quart into the oil fill port. Wipe the dipstick with a rag to ensure a good reading and then insert the dipstick into the dipstick port (don't be a dipstick by putting it into the fill port) and see where the fill level is. Continue to add a little oil from the 3rd quart, wiping and checking the dipstick, until you reach the "F" fill line. Do not over fill your engine. Close up the oil fill port, ensure your dipstick is seated. Wipe up any spills. Done!

* Reconnect: reattach and tighten the negative terminal cable to the battery negative (black) terminal, tightening the screw on the clamp. Ensure that the terminal cable boot is seated over the terminal and clamp. Reinstall the maintenance panel. Visibly check the inside of the engine compartment for any removed parts or tools... Turn on the breaker on the inside house panel as well as the load breaker on the generator.

* Reset maintenance alert.: use the RDC2 arrow keys to select the error and reset the maintenance calendar to next year.

* Test: press the run button, ensuring that the black motor shroud is over the engine. It should start up quickly - let it run for a few minutes. Validate oil pressure is :OK on the RDC2 LED status annunciator. Check for any other errors. Press AUTO and return the generator to standby mode. Lift shroud and visually inspect oil filter seating isn't leaking, etc. Close it up

Please dispose of your oil at the nearest jiffy lube or equivalent - this is synthetic oil and there is absolutely no rationalization for dumping...
