Product Description

The Hanna Instruments HI 98128W is a hand-held pH and temperature meter with automatic calibration, a replaceable electrode, automatic temperature compensation, a stability indicator, and an LCD screen. The meter provides readings from -2.00 to 16.00 pH (+ or - 0.1), with a resolution of 0.01 pH. It is designed for wine and beverage making, but can be used for other applications.

The HI 98128W meter features automatic calibration with two sets of memorized buffers (pH 4.01/7.01/10.01 or pH 4.01/6.86/9.18), and automatic temperature compensation (ATC) for ease of use. An internal stability feature indicates when to take a reading, and a hold function allows the user to freeze the display to record results. The meter floats if dropped in liquid, and features a replaceable HI 73127 pH electrode to prolong the life of the meter. Four 1.5V batteries are included, and provide approximately 3,000 hours of continuous use.

The HI 98128W tester measures temperatures of -5 to 60 degrees C (23 to 140 degrees F), + or - 0.5 degrees C (+ or - 1 degree F) with maximum relative humidity (RH) of 100% with resolution 0.1 degrees C (0.1 degrees F), and has a range of -2.00 to 16.00 pH (+ or - 0.1) and resolution of 0.01 pH. Operating temperature range is -5 to 50 degrees C (23 to 122 degrees F). The meter measures 63 x 40 x 26 mm/6.4 x 1.6 x 1.0 inches (H x W x D) and weighs 100 g (3.5 oz.). (H is the vertical distance from lowest to highest point; W is the horizontal distance from left to right; D is the horizontal distance from front to back.)

pH testers measure the acidity or alkalinity of a substance and are commonly used by researchers, manufacturers, and hobbyists.

Hanna Instruments manufactures analytical instrumentation and supplies, including pH meters, electrodes, chemical reagents, and buffer solutions. The company, founded in 1978 and headquartered in Woonsocket, RI, meets International Organization for Standardization (ISO) 9001 standards.

Hanna Instruments HI 98128W pH and Temperature Tester with Solutions for Wine Review

We have really low pH in our house. It's around 6.5 which is low enough to help eat the copper pipe and stain the fixtures blue.

So we installed a system that injects soda ash into the well water thereby increasing the pH to something higher that will allow our poor copper pipes to survive a while longer.

That's all fine and dandy to do, but you need a way to test the pH.

I found this online and pulled the proverbial trigger. I work at a water / wastewater utility and we don't really use too many Hanna field instruments but we have a bunch of pH analyzers of different stripes. Unfortunately, people would notice if I unbolted a process analyzer from the wall and installed it in my basement.

One of our lab people had some pH 4, 7 and 10 calibration solution made up. I bought a bunch of the required 357 batteries and turned on the Hanna. Ok so, I tried to turn it on. The power button on the left took a great deal of force to activate as if the button had sunken into the unit. Once on however, I calibrated it using a 2 point calibration and resampled the stock calibration solutions. It was close enough for field work.

Annoyances: power button seems sketchy for a new device; little teeny batteries at the top of the unit require a little teeny screwdriver to get to; little teeny screws likely to get dropped / lost; requires 357 button batteries which are not common; would likely be hard to use in the field unless you had the foresight to bring more batteries and the appropriate screwdriver to field replace the batteries

Pluses: calibrated quickly and appears to be accurate enough to use for field reports; have not had the folks at our lab test it against bench or process analyzers to see how it fares against higher priced equipment

Summary: get a tiny screwdriver, tiny batteries, hope the buttons don't fail, cheap and easy way to field measure pH with a decent accuracy / repeatability
