We have a pretty large yard (4 acres) and wifey has planted it abundantly with roses, ground cover, young trees and so forth. The problem is that she was always on her knees with either a hedge trimmer or garden shears to clip the grass from around the plants. This made for hard work.
So she set out to solve the problem and bought a basic Sun Joe electric grass shear.
It did not last long as the batteries ran out WAY fast and there was no easy way to get the work done quickly: still a lot of crawling around and associated back pain and cramped hands. It finally died and she replaced it with a Black & Decker. That one was worse: the battery lasted a little over 30 minutes and took forever to recharge. It was not a success and ended up in the abandoned tool bin.

About the 8893-U and the extension handle
Finally we shelled out for this 8893-U shear by Gardena and the optional extension handle. I believe the technology of the shears comes from Husqvarna. It promised a long lasting battery, solid build and an extension handle that would make it the perfect fit. Except for the steep price.

Here are our pros and cons:

PROS:
- Battery lasts well over 1 hr of continuous use. We were able to get the entire job done in one go. That's superb. Other required 3 runs/recharges to get this far,
- The telescopic handle is a great option: saves your back
- The wheels make it easy to walk around with: relives strain from your arms
- The cutting head can be angled up or down
- The cutting head can be replaced with another or different one
- Its solid quality but light weight

CONS
- EXPENSIVE!! Basically 4 to 5 times as expensive as the cheaper brands. I still bought it since it does what it promises but wonder about the price point being overly padded. Took 1 star of for price/quality because of it.
- The battery is built in, you cannot simply slip in another one. But again, it lasts so long on a charge that you don't really really need it. I am more wondering when the battery gets to its life cycle end.
- If you think the unit is expensive, then try the telescopic arm. Another 50 bucks. Or the extra shears. Whoa. Everything on this item seems over priced

Conclusion:
If the cheap products out there fail you for the same reasons they failed us then what is too expensive?
