With one caveat, this item works very well.

I have pulled out many trees, and sometimes just tried to pull out trees. Trees with shallow root systems pull out very well, trees with deep tap roots can be problematic. Having said that, the tool itself is very strong and has suffered no more than paint chipping from being attached to nearly immovable tree stumps (I cut the trees 3-4 feet from the ground, attach the grubber near the top, so that there is a some leverage-- particularly for the larger trees. Also, you really don't want a 6" to 8" diameter tree to be pulled over onto you).

The Brush Grubber Xtreme has large spike teeth (about 1.5" long), and I have never had a problem with bark stripping which can happen with the lighter duty Brush Grubber tools that are similar to this one but have much shorter teeth. Indeed, sometimes it requires significant effort to remove the grubber from its deathgrip on a tree... I would not consider bark stripping as an issue with the Xtreme or Xtreme HD.

The only real problem, and a reason for the 4 star rating, is the infernal spring that keeps the BGrubberX jaws closed. This spring is not well attached and comes off when the Grubber is dragged on the ground-- something that inevitably happens when pulling out a tree. Don't lose the spring.... I put some fluorescent surveyor tape on it so I can find it when it comes off after my first experience spending 20 minutes searching for the darn spring in the churned up dirt. The jaws won't stay clamped on the tree while you are setting up to pull if the spring is missing (I consider it unsafe to have a person holding the jaws closed while starting a pull). The spring seems to come off now about every 3rd or 4th tree... seems almost like a wear item, and I'll probably have to contact BAC Industries for a replacement spring (or two).

A 70hp tractor w/towbar is used with the Xtreme. The Xtreme and XHD are pretty heavy-- and sure seem to get heavier and heavier as the day goes on. If you don't need the features of the Xtreme you probably would be happier with the lighter duty and lighter weight version. OK, but I don't eat the dog food... if the BG Xtreme HD were available when I was buying, I'd have bought that one, no matter the weight!
