Algreen Castilla Slate Rain Barrel, 50-Gallon Review

Just purchased this exact item from Home Depot for $89. It is actually quite nice looking - the finish has a nice "sanded" quality to it, and not "plastic-y" looking - which is what I was looking for. It is well constructed and there are no noticeable seams on the sides of the barrel. The top, rear panel where the water goes in is screened to keep debris out. There are two water outlets - a faucet and a hose attachment at the bottom (although no actual hose came with mine). I had several requirements for a rain barrel, since this is prominently "displayed" on our patio. 1). It had to be nice looking and not look like plastic. 2). It had to have the two water access points - the regular faucet that I can put a bucket under and the hose outlet at the bottom to be able to access water if the water level gets low. 3). I preferred one that had a small planter at the top, front to put flowers, which this one does. We have installed ours with a copper rain chain, and it looks really nice. We elevated ours approx. 18" off the patio deck with landscape bricks, and that also looks really nice; the landscape bricks are an inexpensive and sturdier alternative to the rain barrel holders sold on line (I purchased 6, 6" thick landscape bricks with a nice texture and stacked them, and these cost only $1.59 ea). Since we had a rain barrel once before, I know it is essential for the barrel to be elevated off the ground in order to allow the barrel to drain properly when utilizing the hose. The barrel uses gravity to drain and if the water level is low you absolutely cannot get the water to exit the bottom hose outlet into a bucket without the barrel being elevated. If you are interested in this rain barrel and want to put plants in the built in "planter" in the front portion of the lid, be advised that the depth of this planter is only approx. 4" - 5" deep and there is no drainage. Make sure to put some pebbles or stones in the bottom of the planter, use plants that don't mind poor drainage or be cautious to not over-water. Also be aware that the faucet is plastic - it is decent looking and actually looks like bronze. Time will tell if this part will hold up; I may end up putting an actual metal faucet on mine.
