Bora Care - 1 Jug Natural Borate Termite Control NI1001 Review

I've purchased it after getting a quote from Terminix to treat some powderpost beetle damage.
It wasn't clear whether the infestation was current or an old one, but this product is great for both active infestations and preventative care.

Terminix charge $1.00 per square foot, so my quote was $350 (Basement, and two small-ish crawlspaces).
The sales guy was assuring me that I can't get this stuff anywhere on my own; I knew better, and sure enough Amazon had some.

I don't know how much Terminix guys dilute when they apply;
Supposedly, they apply it at 1:2 or 1:3 concentration.
At that rate, I still came out ahead, having spent $90 on the chemical itself and about $40 on supplies (sprayer and disposable coveralls) to treat my 350 sq. ft.

One gallon of the concentrate diluted 1:2 was barely enough for that area though.
I was spraying the heaviest on the sill plate an the lightest on the overhead space between the joists. Still, at that rate, I used the 1-gallon bottle to the last drop.

Some advice:

Get a 2-gallon pump sprayer with a wand (such as the RoundUp brand found at a home improvement store for around $20).

Get a set of disposable coveralls ($10 at the store), latex gloves and a lexan face shield (or protective goggles;
A full face shield is preferable, though, since you want to protect your bare skin as well.
According to the MSDS it will hurt your eyes and it *will* penetrate through your skin).

To dilute, use *very warm* water (not hot, as it will most likely damage your sprayer) and shake it REALLY WELL.

This stuff is like a thick maple syrup or honey, so if you don't dilute it properly, it will clog the sprayer feeder tube.
If it does, use a 14-gauge solid copper wire to clear it out (on my RoundUp sprayer 14-gauge bare copper wire did the trick; Your results may vary depending on the model).

Do not let it sit too long diluted in the sprayer; It will thicken, or even crystallize like other reviewers said.

Spray away!

Like other reviewers also noted, it WILL leave a sticky residue behind if you overspray, so cover whatever you don't want ruined with some drop cloths or tarps. Any hard surfaces, though, can be wiped down later with damp paper towels or rags.

According to the data sheet, it will still work even if lumber is treated by the chemical only on three or even two sides, so don't stress about the back side of the sill plate or any other hard-to-get-to studs and joists.

It will NOT work on painted or varnished lumber.

All in all, Bora-Care is fairly safe and easy to apply, and it's supposed to work really well.

This is an inorganic compound, so there is very little smell, and it's supposed to last once applied for years and years.
It will make the lumber completely inedible to termites, powder post beetles, and many other wood-boring insects.

All in all, applying it myself saved me about 40% over the Terminix quote.

Weigh your options, though. Depending on how heavy you might have to go, the extra 30-40 percent MAY be worth it for you to have someone else apply it. Of course, that also depends on how generously THEY apply it.

Just keep my numbers in mind (1 gallon of 1:2.5 solution will treat about 200 ft2 if sprayed generously, vs. $1 per square foot when applied by Terminix;

Call around for quotes from other pest control businesses, too.
Beware of pushy salespeople looking to sell you plans, and telling you that the sky is falling. Large chains like doing that.

2X4basics 90182 Picnic Table Kit, Sand [Frames Only] Review

I've been wanting one of those old-fashioned picnic tables that has separate benches so that we could move them around and use them for different things if we wanted to. Also it's impossible to seat people in wheelchairs at tables that have the benches attached! But it seems they just don't make nice, simple things like that anymore. So I bought this kit thinking my husband could get it assembled in time for the 4th of July.

Well, on looking over the instructions on the box, I had a sneaking suspicion I might just be able to do it myself, since there is no measuring or cutting - especially no miter cuts! - involved. All I had to do was ask the guy at Home Depot to cut 4 of the 20 2"x4" boards to the specified length. The rest is all done with an electric screwdriver.

I would've got it all done in less than an hour if I hadn't wanted to paint the wood first. I used untreated fir studs - I just didn't feel safe using treated wood around food, no matter how much less toxic it's supposed to be than the old kind - and I used two coats of a redwood-colored latex to protect the wood from weather and carpenter bees. Seriously, waiting for the paint to dry was the hardest part of the whole process! Once that was done, screwing the boards to the frame only took a few minutes - I literally did it while making dinner (OK dinner was frozen pizza, but still!)

The plastic used for the frame is very thick and sturdy, and is screwed to the wood with lots and lots of serious wood-screws, so there is no wobble at all and the finished table is very sturdy. I expect it is going to last for many years of family gatherings.

Oh, the other thing I like about it is the way the bottoms of the plastic legs slide very easily across the deck without scratching it.

I think maybe the only way I could improve this kit would be to have it available in a redwood color so it would match the tabletop better - I would have paid extra for that if I could have found it.

Given the attractive appearance in the photo, I expected much from this Ganesh, and like the deity that he is, those those expectations are exceeded. As a scribe, I couldn't have dreamed a better Ganesh to sit on my desk for inspiration. In his right hand, he is making a protective mudra (sign) and in his other right hand holding a prod (to spur us on, of course). He holds a lotus in his trunk (signifying love). In his left hand he is holding a scroll (signifying his powers as a scribe) and is making another mudra, which I have been unable to identify. According to my research, the dance is an energetic defense - I hope against procrastination, grammatical errors, and misspelled words.

And the face on this Ganesh is expressive. I swear he's looking at me, imploring me to better marshal my words!

Eco Saver 20-Foot Solar Heating Panel System Review

We have an Intex above-ground 10 x 20 rectangular pool, and last year the water was so cold that this year we decided to try adding a heating system of some sort. This product got some good reviews (and some not so good), but the price was right so we decided to take a chance.

First, be aware that this product is NOT something you'll just pull out of the box, hook up to your pool, and be using in a matter of minutes. The 20' long panels (four of them joined together on side baffles) are long and twisty, and if you don't have a rack ready to go, you won't be able to just prop the panels up against the pool as it looks like in the picture. You'll have to build some kind of rack, unless you are comfortable just laying it on the ground (which is where ours currently is, though we plan to build some kind of rack soon). The company needs to start manufacturing and selling racks that are specifically designed to support these heating systems...

Next, this product comes with a couple hose adapters, but you'll need one extra hose that you don't typically need for the operation of your pool (you will need one hose for pool to pump; one for pump to filter [if you have a separate filter], one for filter to heater inlet, and one for heater outlet to pool inlet). We needed a 12 foot length of standard above-ground pool hose to reach from the outlet of the heater to the inlet of the pool, plus we had to slide the pump/filter over so the filter outlet hose could reach the heater inlet adapter. The 20-foot long system hooks up on the end, so if your pool filter/pump hooks up in the middle of the pool, you'll need to shift things over and get extra hoses to reach it all (unless you don't mind that your heating coils reach 10 feet beyond the length of your pool.

Also, be aware that one of the two hose adapter parts that come in the box might actually be screwed upside down inside one of the adapters...I spent about an hour thinking that we were missing a part before I figured out that it was actually there...maybe that's just me being already a little frustrated and not looking hard enough the first few times...

You will also need adapters to connect the hose from the filter to the hose inlet on the heater (a 1 1/4" size opening) (we went to our local pool supply company and purchased something that worked) as well as a second adapter to connect the hose leading from the heater back to the pool inlet. In our case, our standard hoses are 1 1/2" diameter, and the inlet/outlet on the heater are 1 1/4" in diameter, so there were some adjustments to be made. There is an optional "Intex Adapter Kit" that you can buy along with the pool; we ended up jimmy-rigging something with the help of the pool supply company, but I am thinking that the Intex Adapter Kit would have saved us a whole lot of trouble. I don't know for sure, because nowhere could I find a description of what is included in the Intex Adapter Kit and it was out of stock when I ordered our solar heater, but I'm assuming it was designed to solve some of the problems we faced. So, doing it again, I would get that Adapter Kit. You can always return it if you don't end up needing it. And don't forget to order the 12 or so feet of extra hose that you'll need (we used 1 1/2" hose that matched the existing hoses on the pool system, but if the adapter kit changes the diameter to 1 1/4", you'll need that instead...I just don't know). Basically, it takes some trial and error, some patience, and some extra dollars to get the system actually up and running.

SO...the setup is a pain. But now that it's running properly, it seems to work GREAT! We only had it running for a couple hours this afternoon, the outside temp only reached about 85 degrees (it's only June 1), and in that short time the pool temp rose 3 degrees. I'm feeling pretty confident that after a couple more hot days of running the system for several hours, we're going to see a significant increase in pool water temperature. Especially if you have a pool supply company nearby to help you with the hookup issues, I recommend this product. If you don't have a supply company nearby, get the adapter parts and extra hose when you order the system and you should still be good to go.
