GreenWorks 20302 G-MAX 8-Inch Pole Saw, No Battery or Charger Review

Needed a pole saw to clear limbs from buildings, gardens, etc. . My property includes two rental cottages and a 2 mile hiking trail and I do a lot of tree-cutting maintenance. I have two chainsaws, a Stihl and a Jonsared. Both are commercial quality, excellent saws that are real workhorses. Planned on getting a Stihl pole saw, but the price was just too steep, between $500 and $900 depending on weight and other concerns. For me, a pole saw isn't used frequently like the regular chain saws, so I decided to give the Greenworks a try. After research, decided to go with the 40 volt lithium battery. The saw arrived several days ahead of schedule and I put it to use soon after the initial charging. The chain and bar are of high quality steel. The pole sections go together with ease and are sturdy, very little flex. With the battery installed at the handle base, the saw is well balanced and easy to control. The cutting surprised me with its efficiency and speed. The weight of the saw provides enough pressure to cut through the limbs with ease, allowing the operator to concentrate fully on the balance of the saw. I was able to saw limbs for an hour and the battery was still working at full power when I finished. I left the limbs lay where they fell (to gather later), so sawing for an hour meant that I used the battery pretty much, probably 25% to 30% of the time. (Actually, I quit sawing because I was tired, not because the battery needed charging.) If the operator saws the limbs as instructed, with a shallow lower cut first, then the finishing upper cut, the limb falls nicely and the blade does not get caught in a bind, meaning that the chain remains tight to the bar. Chain tension is easy to maintain in any case, although if there is a weakness to the saw, it is with the tensioning system in that it's not as secure as regular chain saws. Another difference from regular chain saws that I noticed was with the oiling. My Stihl and Jonsared have the oil and gas reservoirs pretty much coordinated. When gas runs out, the oil is about gone too. Since the Greenworks uses a battery, the operator has to pay much closer attention to the chain oil reservoir to make sure the chain is still getting lubrication. In summary, if you'll be using a pole saw less than ten times a year, the Greenworks gives you fine performance and is cost effective. I'm really impressed with the battery system and plan to buy one of their hedge trimmers in the near future. If you use a chain saw, and especially a pole saw, you MUST use a logger's helmet that has working face visor and ear protectors. Buy the best you can find, otherwise you'll be in for a terrible experience and injury. This is not a luxury, but a necessity. Don't be a fool. A good logger's helmet is worth every cent.
